I help leaders who are charting new paths forward

I believe that wisdom is the timely application of knowledge.

What we do matters more than what we know.

I find that many business owners and leaders know a lot -
but they're sometimes frustrated in the doing.

"...because I lack the time to do it all."

"...because my team just doesn't get it the way I do."

"...because, I don't actually know what to do - and somebody is going to lose confidence in me if they find out."

I create safe spaces to look at what you know
and apply it in new ways.

There's no cookie-cutter solution.

You are a unique innovator.

You're changing the world in a different way than everyone else.

That's your unique selling proposition (USP).

We co-create an action plan that's just as unique as your business.

Then, as a coach and consultant,
I walk with you through the "doing".

Hi! I'm Dave Bates, an experienced senior executive with a passion for helping leaders communicate effectively and execute their vision.

In addition to a wide range of skills, I work with a network of specialists who can provide additional capacity or a highly specialized tactical focus based on your current state and growth goals.

My Background

I studied organizational communications and professional writing in college.

As a freshman, I participated in an advanced organizational communications course during which I was asked to lead the management team in a semester-long collective bargaining simulation. I loved it! That energy helped me shepherd our team to become the only “company” to resolve the labor dispute and get the “factory” back into production before the end of the course.

And, so began my passion for organizational sense making, sound leadership, and exceptional communication.

Fast-forward 30 years to the present day.

I’ve led a lot of real-world teams at companies that deliver products and provide services. My professional experience includes practical training as an organizational coach. I've also worked as a consultant across a variety of industries.

I have seen successful patterns that achieved results. I've also seen leaders and teams actively working against  their own success. Sometimes they recognized it. Sometimes they didn't.

It didn’t have to be that way for them.

- and -

It doesn’t have to be that way for you.

I once heard a CEO (Eric Holter, Cuberis) say:

“Its hard to read the label when you’re inside the milk bottle.”

Aside from being hilarious (if you really stop and think about what it would actually be like inside a milk bottle) this comment is really profound. As leaders, we’re often so focused on running the business that it is hard for us to evaluate what’s holding us back from achieving even more.

Here's a quick summary of the professional leadership roles I've held:

Chief Executive Officer

Chief Operating Officer

Principal Consultant

Small Business Owner

Director, Technical Services

Manager, Customer Service Training

Manager, Engineering Services

Sr. Project Manager

Team Leader, Information Development

Along with many important tools that apply to specific areas of the business, I believe strongly in the adoption of agile frameworks, continuous improvement practices, and management systems like the Turn The Ship Around (David Marquette) and the Entrepreneurial Operating System from EOS Worldwide.

The most valuable tool I have is adaptability. I know how to evaluate where the challenges are and work with leaders to craft solutions that will deliver stable teams capable of scaling for growth and results.

My purpose is to help leaders read their label - and take action.
